So instead of handing over a snack that requires a chemistry degree to decode, I started making these easy homemade animal crackersāand let me tell you, theyāre a win for everyone in the house. The recipe was given to me from a friend, and let me tell you…. it’s perfect. So much easier then I was expecting! Making clean and safe snacks for your kids does NOT have to be overwhelming.
Theyāre made with simple, real ingredients, come together fast, and still feel like a āfun snackā for kids. And for the moms? Weāre adding a little bonus at the end that makes this snack feel extra special.
Why Make Homemade Animal Crackers?
Because if itās shaped like an elephant, Iām not convinced it needs:
- Artificial dyes
- Preservatives with unpronounceable names
- A shelf life longer than my kidās shoes
These homemade animal crackers use pantry staples, skip the weird stuff, and still deliver that lightly sweet, crunchy snack kids love.
Easy Animal Crackers Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 cup flour (I used golden wheat)
- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- ā teaspoon salt (leave out if youāre using salted butter)
- ¼ cup butter, softened
- 2 tablespoons milk
- 3 tablespoons maple syrup
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- White House FoodsĀ® Apple Butter for dipping (totally optional–but highly recommend.)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Place all ingredients into a bowl and use a hand mixerāor your handsāto mix until a dough forms.
- If the dough is a little crumbly, make sure itās thoroughly combined first.
- If needed, add ½ā1 tablespoon of additional milk until the dough comes together.
- Shape the dough into a flattened disc.
- Roll the dough ¼-inch thick on a lightly floured surface. (The flour helps the cutouts move easily.)
- Cut out shapes using animal cookie cutters and transfer them to the prepared baking sheets.
- Bake for 7ā9 minutes, until lightly browned around the edges.
- Remove from the oven and let cool on the baking sheet for one minute, then transfer to a wire rack to cool!
**I stored mine in an emptied and cleaned White House Apple Butter jar.**
