Easy Animal Crackers Recipe (With a Grown-Up Bonus 🍎)

There’s something about animal crackers that feels nostalgic. They’re cute, they’re crunchy, and kids lose their minds over anything shaped like an animal.🦒 But then you flip the box over… And suddenly the ingredient list feels longer than your grocery receipt and your to-do list combined. (For the recipe, keep reading.)

So instead of handing over a snack that requires a chemistry degree to decode, I started making these easy homemade animal crackers—and let me tell you, they’re a win for everyone in the house. The recipe was given to me from a friend, and let me tell you…. it’s perfect. So much easier then I was expecting! Making clean and safe snacks for your kids does NOT have to be overwhelming.

They’re made with simple, real ingredients, come together fast, and still feel like a “fun snack” for kids. And for the moms? We’re adding a little bonus at the end that makes this snack feel extra special.

Why Make Homemade Animal Crackers?

Because if it’s shaped like an elephant, I’m not convinced it needs:

These homemade animal crackers use pantry staples, skip the weird stuff, and still deliver that lightly sweet, crunchy snack kids love.

Easy Animal Crackers Recipe

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Place all ingredients into a bowl and use a hand mixer—or your hands—to mix until a dough forms.
    • If the dough is a little crumbly, make sure it’s thoroughly combined first.
    • If needed, add ½–1 tablespoon of additional milk until the dough comes together.
  3. Shape the dough into a flattened disc.
  4. Roll the dough ¼-inch thick on a lightly floured surface. (The flour helps the cutouts move easily.)
  5. Cut out shapes using animal cookie cutters and transfer them to the prepared baking sheets.
  6. Bake for 7–9 minutes, until lightly browned around the edges.
  7. Remove from the oven and let cool on the baking sheet for one minute, then transfer to a wire rack to cool!

Kid-Approved… and Mom-Approved

These crackers are:

And best of all, you know exactly what’s in them.

No food dyes. No mystery ingredients. Just real food that still feels fun.

Bonus for Grown-Ups 👀🍎

Once the kids are happily crunching away, here’s the real mom win:

Dip a few crackers into warm apple butter.

Trust me.

A spoonful of White House Foods Apple Butter turns this from “kid snack” into “I deserve this after a long day”energy.

It’s cozy, lightly spiced, and feels like a small indulgence—without actually being one.

Final Thoughts

These homemade animal crackers are proof that:

If you try these, save the recipe, share it with another mom who side-eyes ingredient labels, and don’t skip the apple butter dip. 😉
